Eddie brought Hannah a new Nikon D3100 for Christmas and part of the gift was her workshop today.  We started our day in the studio going through the camera and settings as well as the advantages in shooting in the 2 creative modes Aperture priority and Shutter priority both of which we used today at Marwell.  After our classroom part this morning we went to Marwell and starting with the duckpond we made our way around the park with Hannah capturing some beautiful shots as you will see below.  After we had finished at the park we made our way back to the JP workshops studio to start our photo sorting and editing which was a lot of fun.

Hannah had a great day and we were delighted with the photos that she took using her Nikon 3100 and her 18-55mm kit lens as well as our 50mm 1.4 and out 70-200mm 2.8 which together made a great combo.

The first shot of the ducks might not set the world on fire  but it perfectly demonstrates the correct use of a very fast aperture to create a very shallow Depth of field as well as the correct use of focus points,  well done Hannah,  cracking job !

Simon and Peter are both studying away from home at Uni and both love there photography and wanted to get some photography education with their new D5100 Nikon Cameras although they both had lots of time playing with my my D4′s too, After our initial classroom part we headed up to marwell for a couple of hours and the boys took some great photos, some of animals we have not shot before so all very interesting,  We try to avoid marwel at half term but we have 2 this week

After a couple hours at Marwell we came back to the studio to do some editing in Lightroom and Photoshop and I am pleased to say that with my supervision they edited these themselves which is always our aim all going well,  We also took a few shots in the studio to explain in detail how Aperture priority can completly change the way a photograph looks.

Here are a few of the boys photos, all shot to practice shooting with a shallow depth of field, some through thick dirty glass and others through wire and I think you will agree they are fab and show lots of promise.

Here are a few photos from today,  Please let me and the boys know what you think.

This first one was shot through thick fence wire.

This one was shot through very thick and very dirty glass and in todays sun thats great going.

Probably my favourite chipmunk photo yet, shot through very tiny square cages.

Again this one was shot through glass.

This was probably the shot of the day, both the boys got similar and equally as good shots (see what I did there boys) but I love the stare.

My fav animals at Marwell they were sleepy but still we got the look!

We also spent 30 minutes exploring and explaining in Lightroom to Jo as well as editing her photos below.

After our classroom part Jo shot a few photos, still life juicy red apples as well as a few other bits and you can tell instantly where Jo focused and how she used the depth of field to create a more artistic and interesting photograph.

We had a fun evening with Jo and cant wait to see some of her American adventure photos.

We can tweak our One-2-One days to suit our clients and Marwell suited Lisa perfectly, we did a combination of shots using our AV (aperture priority) settings but also spoke a lot about using TV settings (shutter priority)  because lisa plans to photograph some very fast moving frogs whilst she is there.  Lisa also plans to photograph some waterfalls which is another passion of mine so we gave her some great tips for that too.

Yesterday we were teaching Matt the skills involved with high key and low key photography as well as editing and workflow and we had a great day, we were actually joined by a major photography magazine who I am pleased to say are running a story on JP Workshops but more on that later.

Yesterday Matt setup the lights and posed the shots and used a Canon 5D Mkll with a 24-70 2.8L lens

Guy made it quite clear that we should treat him no differently being in a wheelchair and we did not but I take my hat of to him for shooting these from his chair because I often have to climb all over the place to get those snow leopard shots.

Because of the unusualness (is that even a proper word) lol of this situation,  We actually met Guy a week ago to go over a game plan for yesterday and the one thing that came from Guy was he wanted to know wether to stick with his older Sony DSLR or to start a fresh with a Canon/Nikon system, well after yesterday I am pleased to say that despite taking some fab sharp images with his Sony Guy has decided to move to Nikon…GOOD MOVE

We then headed back to the farmhouse to do a little editing and photography  around the home, Alex is 8 months pregnant and Guy is looking forward to photographing the new baby when he or she arrives next month.

Well we had a fab day meeting Guy and Alex,  Guy will make a great photographer if he puts just 10% of his passion into it which I know he will, such an amazing couple who have such a great lifestyle and have opened our eyes on so many levels, you guys are an inspiration and it was a pleasure and an honour to get to know you and I truly hope that we keep in touch.

We started our day going over a few things that Ali was struggling with before heading off to Marwell with our cameras,  Almost on arrival Ali was showing great promise when photographing the Owls which as anyone who has visited Marwell will know are in a very darkened area with a strong backlit scenario as well as being in thick cages which we taught Ali to shoot through, the photos were amazing,  we then walked around the park trying out different things and Ali continued to shoot some amazing animals including what I think is my best snow leopard shots this year!

After a few hours we headed home for some editing and we were not disappointed, as you will see below the photos are great.

I am extremely proud of what Ali has achieved in such a short time and look forward to lots of photos soon.

Marwell is a great location for our workshops because it allows us to get creative in some quite difficult lighting and shooting conditions, most of these were shot either through thick wire or very thick glass and we teach our  clients how to make their cameras ignore annoying things in the foreground like glass and wire as well as annoying backgrounds by creatively using the depth of field.  Thois is a great way to start in photography because it gives you the principle of controlling your SLR and not letting it control you.

We had a lovely day with Kathryn who shoots a Nikon D80. this meant she could use our lenses which is always fun,  we also taught Kathryn how to use Graduated filters which you can see help bring out the sky in the manor house shots whilst retaining the detail in the building, Sue and I use grad (graduated) filters all the time when we are shooting our landscapes and sunsets and they are a lot of fun and can be very creative, we use Lee pro filters but also have 2 sets of Coking filters that our clients can use whilst on our workshop days.  details on our sunrise and sunset workshops coming soon.

Although the animals did not play ball on Colin and Jon’s day we did have a lot of fun and thankfully the sun shone so no complaints, we also got some amazing photographs of some of the cats which are quite elusive, Jon and Colin were already confident photographers producing lovely work so I am buzzing and looking forward to see in what comes next from these 2.  Colin and Jon were a lot of fun and the day seemed to wizz by, as always we finished our day back at the studio with some editing.

We recently added a mini version of this course called “an introduction to SLR photography”  which is run during the evening for about 2 hours and is based in our JP Workshop hampshire photo training school, Its an ideal way to start your photography training and to see if you like our style of training which I am pleased to say most do because about 40% of the people who have attended this course have gone on to book a full One-2-One day with us.

We generally run these evenings the first Monday and last wednesday of each month and with a maximum of 4 people in our normal classes so you get lots of One-2-One time (remember there are 2 of us) but if you are a group of people we can cater for larger numbers, the course runs from 18:30 until about 20:30 although we often stay later chatting and going over camera settings etc:

If you attend one of these evening courses and decide to upgrade to a full day then you get your evening course fee back so its a win win .

Last week we had 5 people attend the evening and it was a lot of fun, all 5 were Canon DSLR users and there was a lot of bouncing off of each other which made for a great evening.  Last night we had 2 ladies attend,  One with a Fuji Finepix and the Other a Lumix, both picked everything up very well so we got through a lot in the 2 hours.

We worked mainly in Apeture priority but as you will see in the last 2 photos we also talked Steve through Shutter priority shown g the difference shutter speed can make to a photo,  if you see the last 2 photos, the first is boring but the second has come alive,

We had a great day with Steve and as you can imagine lots of great stories but above all of that I came away with a sense of being in the company of a well rounded and very happy man, great day Steve,

We had the most amazing day teaching Gary how to shoot food properly,  IMO there is no point teaching a great chef like Gary how to take photos of food in a studio environment when Gary works in a kitchen. One of my pet hates is wedding photographers who show photos on their homepage that are taken out of the wedding environment and food is no different so to that end all of these were taken using natural light in our kitchen using Gary’s Nikon D7000.

Cathie had chosen one of our “getting to know your camera” workshops which as always starts with the camera settings and a few tips and tricks, after a couple of hours we headed off for Marwell zoo and it was such an amazing day, the sun shone and all but the snow leopards came out to play so Cathie got some amazing shots that made her very happy and me a very proud.

We then headed back to the studio to go over our trip, download our photos and of course edit them, we had such a great time and Cathie took some amazing photos which I am sure you will agree.

Cathie’s photography has gone from the ordinary (she wont mind me saying that I promise) to the extraordinary, each and every photo has that WOW factor and I am pleased and proud to have a big part in that transformation.

This morning after 2 nights we dropped Cathie off at the train station to head off to Bristol, then Bath, Glastonbury, and Edinburgh and we wish her a safe and enjoyable trip, cant wait to see some photos!
